The relationship between the two empires had never been really smooth since the second era and when the old king of Araze passed away the last hope of peace seemed to fade. Conflicts emerged. The empire of Zeezum quietly sent their scouts over the borderline for several times until a single group were captured by Araze's patrols. It was then Araze's new king decided to defend the borderline thus make an end to the conflicts. General Ranston was the captain of the vanguard division of first army and this time received the empire's first order: No talking needed, attack on the first sight. The troops arrived at Mermaine, a small village near the borderline. They waited for a few days before they should go to camp somewhere along the borderline. Though having made little trouble for the villagers, they found themselves not so welcome while staying. Anyway they are heavy shinning armors wielding lances and blades, and the small town based on natural agriculture could hardly bear their existence. Rumors that enemies were approaching spread quickly, making Mermaine even more quiet than usual. When the troops started to move across the village, all the doors and windows were closed tightly, raising the anxiety and melancholy within the army. Suddenly something white and scarlet came into captain Ranston's sight. It was a little girl, not more than nine or ten, standing beside the road. In her hands is a big bunch of red flowers, roses. The marching paused, Ranston spoke rather softly for a military man to the young girl, "So why are you here, little angel?" The girl raised her arms to show the flowers to him, saying, "They are the least I can offer. Mom said you are god-send guardians to fight off bad guys, is that true?" Her eyes were with the color of sapphires and curiosity were inside the pure jewels. The general smiled, "Well... yes, and all of us will fight to death to protect you and all the others. -- I shall thank you on behalf of my good fellows." The girl smiled back, like the sunshine through dark clouds, removing the uneasy feelings in Ranston's heart. She handed the flowers to the general, then pointed at the other end of the road, "I picked many roses, but I'm only able to carry theses here. Sorry I'm too tired to walk back there, but you will soon pass by them." She turned to the general, "They are all for you." Surprised for a little while, Ranston burst out laughing in his loud voice. He looked back and shout to the soldiers, "Hey lads! I now entitle ourselves as the knights of roses, let's show our thanks to who sent us all these beautiful flowers!" During the cheers he turned his head back and asked the girl in a soft tone, "And what's your name, little angel?" "Tarinsa." The girl answered in a rather quiet voice with her face blushed downwards the earth, as if it had taken more courage to speak out her own name than waiting on the dust-covered road for a group people who would spill the blood of others and that of themselves in the coming days. "Tarinsa." The general nodded firmly, and said good bye to the girl. They have an important task to perform, and they should be on their way.
The war broke out just a few days later and in these days more and more troops were passing Mermaine. Soon the villagers were asked to move to somewhere near the capital due to the increase of the scale of war. The fights continued on for ages, and in the end all the villages near the borderline were devastated or destroyed. The first-sent troops under the charge of Ranston fought bitterly when they met the enemy's vanguard, in the place which became the heart of the war afterwards. It was said that very few of them avoid the fate of death and even fewer survived the whole war. When the main force of the empire gradually put themselves into the war, they saw dead bodies everywhere. They recognized their allies by the armors they wore but it was a big surprise to discover that some of them were with a dry, withered rose, carried in the gap of their armor or being held firmly between their teeth. The color of the flowers were a little darker because of the blood spilt on them. It was then a former subordinate of general Ranston, survivor of the fist clash in the long war, established the special army named "Cavalries of Roses". Known as one of the bravest troops of the empire, they've got the tradition that every soldier should carry a rose in teeth when heading into combats, for roses are a symbol of love, beauty and enthusiasm in life. People said the flowers came from a rose garden owned by a mid-aged lady somewhere on the way to the borderline. Now it has been more than a century and the villages near the borderline again flourished. In the wilderness where many soldiers died long ago, grow this strange kind of flower: generally like a red rose, but has a cirle of petals in the color of pale white. Some people said that white is the color of a skeleton, and thus give the flower the somehow scary name of "Skull Rose". However, most of the people just call them, --no one knows why nor where does this name come--, Tarinsa.
